Glodene (Terrell) Chambers, 94, of Bloomington, passed away with her family by her side Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at the Meadowood Health Pavilion.
Born, June 17, 1915 in Brown County, she was the daughter of John W. and Myrtle E. (Hayes) Terrell.
Glodene was the oldest daughter of nine children six girls and three boys.
She would walk six miles to one room schools including the Axsom Branch School. She was a graduate of Smithville High School (1933), the Central Normal College in Danville, IN, and later received her Master’s Degree at Indiana University.
Glodene’s first job was teaching in a one room school at Saddle Creek. Later, she taught at Todd School where six of her sibling’s were students. She taught at other schools including Burgoon, Blackwell, Knightridge, Chapel Hill, Smithville and Lakeview. She was an inspiration to her students, and she loved them as if they were her own children.
Early in Glodene’s life she was a member of the Burgoon Church. She later became a member and is still a member of the Apostolic Bible Church. She would still often visit the Burgoon Church which was a big part of the Terrell family tradition.
Survivors include her five children, Harold F. Chambers of Norman, Roslyn G. Perry (Larry) of Bloomington, John L. Chambers of Norman, Layton L. Chambers and Joanne Werner (Chuck) all of Bloomington, three sisters, Jo Kahn of Riviera Beach, FL, Mary Ellen Lloyd (Larry) of Greenwood, Arlena Wires (Bill) of Bedford, two brothers, Edgar Terrell (Phyllis) of Bloomington, Thurman Terrell (Lilly “Moss”) of Gosport, 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Glodene was preceded in death by the love of her life for 69 years, Roy O. Chambers (2006). She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Floyd (1993), Annalee Rogers (2008), a brother, Lester Terrell (2005) and a grandson, Layton Aaron Chambers (2001).
Services will 1:00pm Saturday, May 22, 2010 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington, with brothers, David Beecham, Duane Coffman, Harold Godsey, and Doug Hughes officiating.
Visitation will be 2-8pm Friday and 12 noon until service time on Saturday at The Funeral Chapel.
Burial will be at the Clear Creek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Bible Church or to the Burgoon Church.
