Charles “Charlie” F. Newton, 76, of Bloomington passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Bloomington Hospital.
Born, August 18, 1933 in Bloomington, he was the son of Raymond and Thelma Mae (Rush) Newton.
Charlie was a member of the Liberty Church of Christ in Hendricksville.
He was a graduate of Bloomington High School and Indiana University.
Charlie was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he was one of the youngest navigators, and later worked for Naval Intelligence.
He was a deputy for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and later a photographer for the Courier Tribune. He retired from Indiana University after 17 years, where he was a custodian in Wright-Quad and a photographer for the Indiana University Athletic Department.
Charlie won numerous awards for his photography including an honorable mention for the Nikon International Contest and was also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years (married October 5, 1979), M. Sharon (Kinnaman) Newton, four children, Kim Hamm (Max) of Bloomington, Sherri Summitt (Perry) of Unionville, John Newton of Bloomington, Andy Brown (Rita) of Ellettsville, a foster son, Adam Tomlin of Bloomington, six grandchildren, Dawn Ingalls, Kara Oltman, Tyler Hamm, Jay Gilliland, Sam Summitt and Zach Summitt, five great-grandchildren, one sister, Mary Francis Salmon (Fred) of Bedford, and one brother, George Newton (Tina) of Gulf Port, MS.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Virginia Lee Wellman and Lonieta Chandler.
Services will be 11:30am Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington, with Brother Keevin Gray officiating.
Visitation will be 4-8pm Tuesday at The Funeral Chapel, with burial at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty Church of Christ, in care of The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard.
