In Memory Of
Katharina Boyko
04/30/1916 - 04/29/2012

Katharina Boyko Katharina Boyko passed away peacefully at Meadowood Health Pavilion on April 29, 2012. She was born Katharina (Kateryna) Huminilovych in Kalush, Ukraine on April 30, 1916, and had been a resident of Bloomington since 1966. Katharina studied business and worked as a bank bookkeeper until displaced by the Second World War. She was also musically gifted and an accomplished singer, having studied voice at the Munich Conservatory in Germany after the war. Her beautiful singing voice resulted in many invitations to perform after she first immigrated to Canada. Katharina's husband Maksym (Max) preceded her in death in 1998 and she is survived by her son Ihor and daughter-in-law Nancy of Indianapolis IN and son Orest and daughter-in-law Luba and granddaughters Anissa and Laryssa of San Francisco CA, niece Irene Slysh of Hershey, PA, and nephews in Canada and Ukraine. Katharina enriched the life of each person she met and will be very much missed by all of us. The family especially wishes to thank her very close friend Carol English who regularly visited with her. After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, Katharina was grateful for the opportunity to make several trips there to visit relatives and the city of her birth. She was also a loving and generous person who opened her home to students from Ukraine who came to study at Indiana University. One of her favorite charities was the Monastery of the Holy Family in Hoshiv, Ukraine since the Sisters there take care of orphans. Interment will be next to her husband Max at St. Andrew’s Cemetery in South Bound Brook, NJ in accordance with the Eastern Byzantine Rite. Katharina's family is planning a celebration of her life at Meadowood Retirement Community in Bloomington, Indiana in the near future. The family expresses its sincere appreciation to the staff of Meadowood Health Pavilion for the care provided and to Fr. Cassian and other members of St. Paul Catholic Center who attended to her spiritual needs. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Family Monastery, c/o Ukrainian Federal Credit Union, 282 Providence Highway, Lambert's Plaza, Westwood, MA 02029. The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard is handling local arrangements in Bloomington. Katharina, our loving mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and aunt, devoted to her extended family and friends, brought so many gifts to our lives, we will never forget them. VICHNAYA PAMYAT

To our babcha, you were such a loving, caring and understanding grandmother, that our memories together cannot be forgotten. Our father was grateful to God that he had a mother like babcha. May babcha's soul rest in peace.

Katharina was a friend of my mother, Mary Ann Gilligan. I remember the beautiful, decorated eggs that she would bring to our family for Easter. She was a friend to my my mother who is now almost 97 and in a nursing home. For my mother and family I wish to express our deep gratitude for the friendship that Katherina developed with my mother over the years.

Katharine Boyko was my sister's mother-in-law. I knew her through spending holidays with her in the 80's and 90's. She was an interesting and generous person and I liked her candor. Her family was the main focus of her life. She raised two successful sons. She was fortunate to live a long and healthy life and will be sorely missed. I'll always think of her when I look at the Eukranian eggs she gave me many years ago.

Katherine (MaMa) was a person who I learned and shared so much with it is hard to put it all in words. She was an extremely generous person and a wonderful mother to her two sons. They were the light of her life and she never wavered in her support and love for them. I admired her ability to enjoy the simplicity in life and be content with everyday things. She enjoyed her traditions and they gave much purpose to her life. I thank her for caring about me, Love, Nancy

I am so grateful we had lived in Bloomington, IN for ten years and have nice memories of anniversies (i.e. Katherine and Max 40th) and birthday get togethers shared. Nancy was able to have a party at our condo for Katherine's 80th birthday and some of her best friends, Mrs. Sophia Kudryk and Mrs. Hreha came along with Max & Ihor. Katherine liked to give us Easter bread that she made every year and we enjoyed being together. May she live on in peace and spirit. Judy Rodia

Ihor,Nancy,Orest,Luba & families,

Words fall short of expressing our deepest sympathy for the loss of your dear mother. Although I never met her in person, I felt like I knew her from hearing about the amazing things she accomplished in her life, and what a loving person she was.
May the sorrow you feel in your heart be comforted and lightened by the love of friends that surround you.

Dear Ihor, Orest and family;

It is with great sadness that I learned of Auntie Katrya's passing. She was the last Huminiloych of her generation. Her sister, my mother, pre-deceased her some years ago. The two were close, having survived WW2 together and then lived in Winnipeg for almost 15 years before Katryn and her family moved to Ontario and then Indiana. I remember the meals at her home in Winnipeg when our two families got together. She was a deeply religious person and my godmother. Although I did not see her during her later years I talked to her often during my mother's last few years. She always showed care and concern for my mother and for me and the rest of the family.

With her passing I feel that a small page in Ukrainian history has turned. My sincerest condolences to both of you and your families on your mother's passing. May we see each other soon to remember her and our childhoods in Winnipeg.

God Bless,

Our lives are so intermingled by Auntie Katrya, whose devotion to and love of God and Christ helped us all in this difficult world. She was a glorious person from a glorious family. A light has passed from this world. We all needed her prayers and her good wishes, and now, we carry the sorrow in our hearts with her passing. Auntie Katrya, we thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for your goodness and devotion. Even though you are no longer here with us, your light will continue to guide us to the greater and important things. And thankyou for the music you left to the world. You are so deeply missed.
Your loving nephew, Lubomyr Melnyk, and family, Lesia, Lubomyr Jr., and Stephany.
